Feeding Their Families

Women produce up to 80% of the food grown in Kenya — they are responsible for feeding their children and all other members of their households. And so much more.
Women farmers are SANGO-Kenya’s focus– they are the ones who will ensure that the healthy organic vegetables, cassava, sorghum, and poultry they raise are used to feed their families.

This week, the world celebrates the International Day of Rural Women and World Food Day. We celebrate all of the women farmers of SANGO-Kenya.
We started SANGO-Kenya six years ago — in 2020 — with just 19 women farmers in one village. Even then, the direct impact was great — in the first year, over 100 women, children, and other household members’ food and nutrition security was strengthened as a result of our fledgling program.

Fast forward to 2026: Today, we have approximately 800 farmers in 17 villages in two regions of Kenya — with a direct impact on approximately 5,000 people, including more than 50 Maasai women who are now raising, eating, and feeding their families organic African Traditional Vegetables. This is a significant shift from their primarily meat-based diets.
And we are continuing to expand! Next month, we will add another 250 women, making a total of more than 1,000 women whom SANGO-Kenya has trained or will train in sustainable farming, nutrition, and livelihoods!

“Empowering women is not only the right thing to do but is a critical ingredient in the fight against extreme poverty, hunger and climate change,” according to the UN.
We hear the same thing from the community leaders where we work — they all support our farmers, our work, and our team. And they all want us to expand to their entire communities, so that more rural women can expand their food production, increase their ability to feed their families.
And we see how the training and knowledge SANGO-Kenya provides transforms lives — improves the health of the women, their children, and their communities.
The theme of World Food Day 2026 is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.”
We innovate through knowledge, training, in-field support. So that we can prepare the SANGO-Kenya farmers to nourish their families for many tomorrows to come.

We could never do any of this without you. Your support makes it all possible.
Thank you.
With deepest gratitude,
The SANGO-Kenya farmers, Winnie, Evance, Peter, Junior, Eli — and Connie and Kit
